45 million years missing

Mar 16

In 2007, scientists were surprised to discover an Edmontosaurus and a Sauroluphus in the same of level of rock just outside of Edmonton. The surprise stemmed from previous research in the Drumheller area where Saurolophus fossils are never found in the same localities as Edmontosaurus. It was thought the two species lived millions of years apart. According to renowned palaeontologist Phil Currie, finding fossils of both plant-eating species together "means they were here at the same time. It's a new discovery."

So, it is not a surprise that Alberta scientists announced they have discovered a small, spidery, dinosaur, Hesperonychus, which raises plenty of questions in regards to its ancestry. There is about a 45 million-year gap in the record between Hesperonychus and its closest relative in China. Palaeontologist Nick Longrich from the University of Calgary says “It’s a pretty massive gap”.

It seems the evolutionary time line is not matching up. Recent fossils finds at Gippsland Beach (Flat Rocks), Australia, has raised controversy about a long held evolutionary theory. This dinosaur rich fossil bed has yielded placental type fossils. This group of mammals was thought to arrive 5 million years ago. So what are they doing with dinosaur fossils that existed supposively115 million years ago? According to evolutionary theory, these mammals should not have been scurrying alongside roaming dinosaurs over the Australian landscape. As one volunteer from Flat Rocks said, "This has broken a culture of science. It proves that if you have a theory that you're holding onto, it can change."

Scientists were also surprised to uncovered fossils of a swimming, fish-eating, mammal that lived in China the same time as the dinosaurs, well before evolutionist thought that some mammals could have spent much of their lives in water. The “Jurassic” Beaver appears to have had a broad scaly tail and sharp teeth ideal for eating fish. Its lifestyle of burrowing in tunnels and dog-paddling in water, reminds scientists of the modern day beaver or otter. The surprising discovery, made in the abundant fossil beds of Liaoning Province, China, was reported in the journal Science by an international team led by Ji Qiang of Nanjing University. Ji and other researchers from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences in Beijing and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh said the fossil skeleton showed that some mammals occupied more diverse ecological niches than had been suspected during the age of the dinosaurs.
Thomas Martin, an authority on early mammals at Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt, said the find pushed back "the mammalian conquest of the waters by more than 100 million years" and "impressively contradicts" the conventional view.

One can be forgiven for thinking that the dates in the fossil record are a done deal, given the authoritative-sounding statements in science journals and books. However, when one takes a step back and looks at recent fossil discoveries, we could only hope that such “finds” break the evolutionary culture of science,…but I highly doubt it.
